about

In the 32 years since the Syncopators were established, they have released more than 24 albums, a body of work surpassing the outputs of most traditional jazz bands - anywhere! This latest offering, The Pearls, comprises a mix of well-known jazz standards, more obscure but worthy tunes, plus one or two originals; and features spirited vocals, a hot driving lead and of course tight ensembles with rich harmonies. The Syncopators' front line has remained unchanged since the band's inception.

The Pearls is one of Jelly Roll Morton's best-known compositions, with an interesting arrangement featuring the fine piano of Stephen Grant. Early Ellington contributes a couple of tunes, namely Delta Bound featuring the muted trombone of Chris Ludowyk with vocal by Rod Gilbert; plus Big House Blues, with the front line in good form. San Antonio Shout, a little-known tune, is a spirited romp featuring stop-time choruses by Gaudion. Resident composer Richard Miller contributes It's About Time and Jamerica, the latter being a catchy tune with the enjoyment of the band most evident. Irving Berlin's Marie pays a nod to Tommy Dorsey, but with Gaudion contributing tongue in cheek vocal, 'a la Peter Lorre', as well as some fine trumpet. St. James Infirmary and Jazz Me Blues are two classic standards with treatment and respect as befits their pedigree. Relaxin' At The Touro, first recorded by Muggsy Spanier, is a great tune that has largely escaped attention by most bands, so it's good to hear the Syncopators' version. Stephen Grant's contributions compare well, while Gaudion also excels. Ugly Child, revived by Graeme Bell in 1947, has remained a favourite of Australian bands and audiences. Gaudion sings the politically incorrect lyrics (as he does) and bassist James Clark gets to solo on this one. Finally, Ole Miss, with a nod to Armstrong All-Stars, swings nicely thanks to the driving lead and some fine drumming by Rodney Gilbert.

All in all, an excellent album, one that is sure to be enjoyed by the many fans of this accomplished band.
